Bordeaux is one of those French cities that gives you a little bit of everything: beautiful historic streets, wine culture, river views, grand squares, old gates, shopping streets, food stops, museums, and a few places that feel completely different from the classic elegant Bordeaux image.

Before visiting, I knew Bordeaux was famous for wine, but I did not know how much there would be to do beyond that. After spending 7 days in Bordeaux, I realized the city works best when you mix the obvious sights with a few of the more unique stops.

Yes, you should see Place de la Bourse. Yes, you should walk through the historic center. Yes, you should try canelés. But I also think Bordeaux gets more interesting when you add places like Cité du Vin, Bassins des Lumières, and Darwin Eco-système.

This guide covers the best things to do in Bordeaux France based on what we actually did, what I think is worth adding to your itinerary, and a few things I would include if I went back.

If you are still deciding whether Bordeaux is worth adding to your France itinerary, start with my Bordeaux France travel Guide. If you only have a short visit, use my One Day in Bordeaux itinerary to plan a walkable route through the historic center.

Best Things to Do in Bordeaux France.png

1. Start at Place de la Bourse

Place de la Bourse is one of the most famous places in Bordeaux, and it is the kind of stop that immediately gives you that classic postcard view of the city.

It is grand, open, elegant, and sits right along the Garonne River. If you have seen photos of Bordeaux before, there is a good chance this square was in them.

This is a great place to start your first day in Bordeaux because it puts you right in the middle of one of the most beautiful areas of the city. From here, you can walk to the Water Mirror, the riverfront, Porte Cailhau, Rue Sainte-Catherine, and several other historic center sights.

Even if you do not have a strict plan, start here and let yourself wander.

2. See the Miroir d’Eau

Right across from Place de la Bourse is the Miroir d’Eau, or Water Mirror.

This is one of the most photographed spots in Bordeaux. It is a shallow reflecting pool that creates a mirror effect with Place de la Bourse behind it. At certain times, mist rolls across the surface, which gives the whole area a softer, more dramatic look.

It is a simple stop, but it is one of those Bordeaux sights you should not skip, especially if it is your first time in the city.

If you are visiting on a nice day, this is also a good place to slow down for a few minutes. You do not need to rush through it. Take your photos, walk along the river, and enjoy the view.

I include this stop in my One Day in Bordeaux itinerary because it is one of the easiest and best places to begin a walk through the city.

3. Walk Through Bordeaux’s Historic Center

The historic center is one of the best parts of Bordeaux.

This is where you get the old streets, stone buildings, pretty squares, churches, cafes, shops, and classic French city atmosphere. Bordeaux is a very walkable city, and this is the area where walking really pays off.

You can map out the major stops, but part of the charm is letting yourself wander a little. Some streets are beautiful without needing to be famous. Some corners just feel like France in that quiet, pretty way.

The historic center is also where you can easily combine several of the main Bordeaux sights in one route, including:

  • Place de la Bourse
  • Miroir d’Eau
  • Porte Cailhau
  • La Grosse Cloche
  • Rue Sainte-Catherine
  • Bordeaux Cathedral
  • Pey Berland Tower
  • Monument aux Girondins

If you only have one day in Bordeaux, this is where I would spend most of it.

For a more organized route, read my Bordeaux historic center walking Guide and my One Day in Bordeaux itinerary.

4. Visit Bordeaux Cathedral

Bordeaux Cathedral, also known as Cathédrale Saint-André, is one of the main historic sights in the city.

Even if you are not someone who visits every church or cathedral while traveling, this one is worth seeing from the outside. The building is beautiful, the square around it is easy to reach, and it fits naturally into a walk through the historic center.

It gives you that classic historic France feeling without needing to plan a whole separate day around it.

This is an easy stop to combine with Rue Sainte-Catherine, Pey Berland Tower, La Grosse Cloche, and the other central sights.

5. Climb Pey Berland Tower for a View

Right next to Bordeaux Cathedral is Pey Berland Tower.

If you like viewpoints and do not mind climbing stairs, this is one of the places to consider for a view over Bordeaux. I always think city viewpoints are helpful because they give you a better sense of how a place is laid out.

Even if you decide not to climb, it is still worth seeing from the outside because it is part of the cathedral area and one of the major landmarks in the historic center.

If you are planning a short Bordeaux itinerary, this can be one of those “do it if you have time and energy” stops.

6. Stop by Porte Cailhau

Porte Cailhau was one of my favorite historic-looking stops in Bordeaux.

It has that old fairytale gate feeling, and it gives you a glimpse of medieval Bordeaux right near the river. It is also close enough to Place de la Bourse and the Water Mirror that you can easily add it into the same walk.

You do not need a lot of time here if you are only stopping for photos, but it is worth adding to your route.

If you have more time, you can also go inside and climb for views, but even from the outside, it is a beautiful stop.

Best Things to Do in Bordeaux France (5).png

7. See La Grosse Cloche

La Grosse Cloche is another classic Bordeaux landmark and one of the city’s old gateway and bell tower sights.

This is one of those places that does not take a lot of time, but it adds a lot to a walking route. It is historic, easy to see from the street, and surrounded by streets that are nice to wander.

If you are doing one day in Bordeaux, I would include La Grosse Cloche along with Place de la Bourse, Porte Cailhau, Rue Sainte-Catherine, and Bordeaux Cathedral.

It is a simple stop, but it helps give the city that older historic character.

Best Things to Do in Bordeaux France (2).png

8. Walk Rue Sainte-Catherine

Rue Sainte-Catherine is Bordeaux’s big shopping street and one of the main places you will probably end up walking at some point.

It is not the kind of stop you need to overthink. It is central, busy, useful, and easy to add into your day. You can shop, grab snacks, stop for coffee, or use it as part of your route through the city.

I would not visit Bordeaux only for shopping, but Rue Sainte-Catherine gives you that city center energy and connects naturally with other major stops.

I wrote a separate Rue Sainte-Catherine Bordeaux Guide because it is one of those places most visitors pass through, especially if they are staying near the center.

Best Things to Do in Bordeaux France (3).png

9. Visit Monument aux Girondins

Monument aux Girondins is another grand Bordeaux landmark and a good stop if you are walking through the city center.

It sits in Place des Quinconces and has that big French monument feeling. You do not need a lot of time here, but it is worth seeing if you are nearby.

This is the kind of stop I would add to a longer walk rather than making it the whole focus of your day.

It pairs well with a walk around the center, the riverfront, or nearby shopping and food stops.

Best Things to Do in Bordeaux France (7).png

10. Visit Cité du Vin

Cité du Vin is one of the top things to do in Bordeaux, and I think it is worth adding to your itinerary.

Before we went, I wondered if it would feel too much like a museum for wine experts. But it was more interesting and interactive than I expected.

This is not just a place where you walk around reading dry information about wine. It is a full wine culture experience with exhibits, sensory elements, history, design, and a tasting/viewpoint experience at the end depending on your ticket.

Even if you are not a wine expert, Cité du Vin helps you understand why Bordeaux is so connected to wine and how wine culture stretches across different countries, histories, and traditions.

It is also a good rainy day activity, which matters because Bordeaux weather can definitely affect your plans.

I go deeper into the experience, ticket value, and who I think it is best for in my Cité du Vin Bordeaux Guide.

11. Go to Bassins des Lumières

Bassins des Lumières was one of the coolest stops we made in Bordeaux.

It is an immersive digital art space inside an old submarine base, and the building itself is part of what makes the experience so interesting. Before you even get into the art, the space already feels different.

It is huge, dark, industrial, and dramatic. Then you add the projections, music, water reflections, and moving art all around you, and it does not feel like a normal museum at all.

This was such a different museum experience from what we usually do in Europe. No quiet white rooms. No tiny signs. No standing in front of one painting trying to figure out what you are supposed to feel.

It felt more like walking through the art.

We took the bus over, and I am glad we went because it gave us a completely different side of Bordeaux beyond wine, shopping streets, and historic squares.

Read my full Bassins des Lumières Bordeaux Guide if you want to know what the experience is like and whether it is worth the trip outside the center.

Best Things to Do in Bordeaux France (9).png

12. Explore Darwin Eco-système

After Bassins des Lumières, we went over to Darwin Eco-système, and this felt like a completely different side of Bordeaux.

Bordeaux is known for wine, elegant streets, and historic buildings, but Darwin had more of that artsy, casual, creative hangout energy.

It reminded me a little of the art district we visited in Shanghai mixed with LX Factory in Lisbon. There was graffiti, creative space, bars, wine shops, a skatepark, places to sit, and people just hanging out.

We visited in the off-season and it was still cold, so the vibe was more relaxed. But you could tell this is probably the kind of place that comes alive when the weather is warmer.

I liked this stop because it showed another side of Bordeaux. Not every stop in the city has to be wine and old buildings.

If you want something a little different, read my Darwin Eco-système Bordeaux Guide.

13. Try Canelés

You cannot really talk about Bordeaux food without talking about canelés.

Canelés are small pastries from Bordeaux with a caramelized outside and a soft custardy inside. They are one of the most famous local things to try, and you will see them all over the city.

This is an easy food stop because you do not need a whole meal plan around it. Just grab one while you are out walking.

If you are someone who likes trying local sweets, add canelés to your Bordeaux list.

I like food stops like this because they fit naturally into sightseeing days. You can be walking through the center, pop into a bakery or pastry shop, try something local, and keep going.

Best Things to Do in Bordeaux France (11).png

14. Eat at L’Entrecôte

L’Entrecôte is one of the most famous restaurant experiences in Bordeaux.

It is known for steak frites, a simple menu, and that very specific kind of hype where people line up because the restaurant is part of the Bordeaux experience.

We went, and I am glad we tried it. I do think it is worth doing if you are curious and want that classic Bordeaux food stop. But I also think it is one of those places where your expectations matter.

For me, it was good and fun to experience, but I would not call it the best meal of my life. It is more about the full experience: the line, the energy, the simple concept, the steak, the fries, the sauce, and being able to say you tried one of the most talked-about food stops in Bordeaux.

If you are trying to decide whether to go, read my full L’Entrecôte Bordeaux Guide.

Best Things to Do in Bordeaux France (12).png

15. Add a Casual Food Stop Like Hans Snackbar

Not every meal in Bordeaux needs to be a classic French restaurant experience.

Hans Snackbar was one of our more casual food stops, and I liked that it gave us something different. Sometimes when you are traveling for a while, you do not want every meal to be a full sit-down situation. Sometimes you just want something casual, filling, and good.

That was one of those stops.

I think food guides should include real travel meals, not just the famous places everyone already talks about. Especially when you are traveling long-term, your food experience is usually a mix of known restaurants, casual spots, snacks, grocery stores, and random places you find while walking.

I include Hans Snackbar in my What to eat in Bordeaux Guide because it felt like part of our real Bordeaux food experience.

Best Things to Do in Bordeaux France (13).png

16. Stop for Chocolate or Hot Chocolate

Bordeaux also gave us some good chocolate moments.

I always like finding chocolate shops, bakeries, or sweet stops while traveling because they are easy to fit into a sightseeing day. You do not have to build a whole itinerary around them. You can just stop in, try something, and keep walking.

If you are visiting Bordeaux in colder weather, hot chocolate also feels like a good little break between sightseeing stops.

These are the little moments that make a city feel more personal. Not every travel memory has to be a major attraction. Sometimes it is a pastry, a hot drink, a chocolate shop, or a small stop that gives you a break from walking.

I included more food details in my What to eat in Bordeaux Guide, including the good food moments and the one meal that humbled me before we left.

Best Things to Do in Bordeaux France (14).png

17. Walk Along the Garonne River

Bordeaux sits along the Garonne River, and the riverfront is one of the best places to walk when the weather is good.

You can start around Place de la Bourse and the Water Mirror, then continue along the water depending on how much time and energy you have.

This is one of those simple things to do in Bordeaux that does not need a ticket or a strict plan. It is just a nice way to see the city, get some fresh air, and slow down between bigger stops.

If we had better weather, I think we would have spent more time around the river.

Bordeaux feels like the kind of city that is even better when you can sit outside, walk slowly, and enjoy the open spaces without rushing.

Best Things to Do in Bordeaux France-2.png

18. Take a Day Trip to Saint-Émilion

We did not make it to Saint-Émilion during our Bordeaux stay, but if I went back, this would be high on my list.

Saint-Émilion is one of the most popular day trips from Bordeaux, especially if you are interested in wine, pretty villages, and seeing more of the region beyond the city itself.

Because Bordeaux is so connected to wine, I think it makes sense to consider at least one wine-focused experience outside the city if you have enough time.

If you only have one or two days in Bordeaux, I would focus on the city. But if you have three or more days, a day trip to Saint-Émilion could be a really nice addition.

Best Things to Do in Bordeaux France (15).png

19. Consider a Wine Bar or Wine Tasting

Bordeaux is one of the most famous wine cities in the world, so even if you do not do a full vineyard day trip, you may still want to include some kind of wine experience.

This could be Cité du Vin, a wine bar, a tasting, a food and wine pairing, or a day trip into the surrounding wine region.

I think this depends on your travel style. If you are really into wine, you may want to build more of your itinerary around tastings and nearby vineyards. If you are more casual about wine, Cité du Vin and one wine bar could be enough.

For us, Bordeaux was not only about wine. I liked that we mixed wine culture with historic streets, food, immersive art, and creative spaces.

Best Things to Do in Bordeaux France (16).png

20. Give Yourself Time to Wander

One of the best things to do in Bordeaux is also one of the simplest: give yourself time to wander.

Bordeaux is not a city where I think you need to rush from attraction to attraction all day. It is better when you leave space for walking, stopping, eating, drinking, and letting the city unfold a little.

This is especially true if you are spending more than a quick weekend there.

Walk the center. Stop for canelés. Sit with a drink. Take a break when the weather gets annoying. Go see something different like Darwin or Bassins des Lumières. Let the city be slower.

That was one of the things I appreciated about Bordeaux. It did not feel like it was trying to overwhelm us.

How to Plan Your Bordeaux Itinerary

If you are trying to organize all of this into a real itinerary, here is how I would think about it.

With One Day in Bordeaux

Focus on the historic center.

Start at Place de la Bourse and the Water Mirror, then walk to Porte Cailhau, La Grosse Cloche, Rue Sainte-Catherine, Bordeaux Cathedral, Pey Berland Tower, and Monument aux Girondins if you have time.

Use my One Day in Bordeaux itinerary for the full walkable route.

With Two Days in Bordeaux

Use the first day for the historic center.

Use the second day for Cité du Vin, the riverfront, and a good food stop like L’Entrecôte if you want the famous Bordeaux restaurant experience.

Best Things to Do in Bordeaux France (4).png

With Three Days in Bordeaux

Add Bassins des Lumières and Darwin Eco-système.

This gives you a more balanced trip because you get historic Bordeaux, wine Bordeaux, and the more creative side of the city.

With Four or Five Days in Bordeaux

Slow everything down.

Add more cafes, more food stops, a wine bar, a museum, a river walk, and maybe a day trip to Saint-Émilion.

With Seven Days in Bordeaux

This is better for slow travel than a packed vacation itinerary.

We spent 7 days in Bordeaux, but we did not spend 7 full days sightseeing. That is the reality of full-time travel. Some days were for work. Some days were for rest. Some days the weather had other plans.

I talk more about that in my 7 days in Bordeaux as a full-time traveler Guide

Best Things to Do in Bordeaux With Teens

I think Bordeaux can work well with teens, but you have to mix the itinerary up.

If your teen is not into wine, architecture, or slow wandering, do not build the whole trip around wine bars and pretty squares.

The stops that worked best for us were the ones that felt more interactive, visual, or different.

For Bordeaux with teens, I would consider:

  • Bassins des Lumières
  • Cité du Vin
  • Darwin Eco-système
  • The historic center
  • Canelés or other sweet stops
  • A casual food stop
  • River walks if the weather is good

That mix keeps Bordeaux from feeling like only wine and old buildings.

Best Free Things to Do in Bordeaux

Bordeaux can get expensive if you are paying for attractions, restaurants, and tours every day, but there are also plenty of things you can do without spending money.

Some of the best free things to do in Bordeaux include:

  • Walk around Place de la Bourse
  • See the Water Mirror
  • Walk along the Garonne River
  • Explore the historic center
  • See Porte Cailhau from the outside
  • See La Grosse Cloche from the outside
  • Walk Rue Sainte-Catherine
  • Visit Monument aux Girondins
  • See Bordeaux Cathedral from the outside
  • Wander through the city’s old streets

This is one reason Bordeaux can work for different budgets. You can spend money on Cité du Vin, Bassins des Lumières, L’Entrecôte, and other paid experiences, but you can also balance that with free walking days.

Best Things to Do in Bordeaux France.png

Things I Would Do If I Went Back to Bordeaux

Even though we spent 7 days in Bordeaux, I still left with a few things I would want to do on a return trip.

That is partly because of the weather and partly because full-time travel is not the same as vacation travel. You can be in a city for a week and still not do everything because real life is still happening.

If I went back to Bordeaux, I would add:

  • A proper wine bar night
  • A day trip to Saint-Émilion
  • More time in Chartrons
  • More river walks
  • A market visit
  • More cafes and food stops
  • More time outside in warmer weather

I would also like to see Bordeaux in a warmer season because I think the city would feel even better with outdoor dining, better walking weather, and more life around the river.

Is Bordeaux Worth Visiting?

Yes, Bordeaux is worth visiting, especially if you like walkable cities, wine culture, historic architecture, food, museums, and a slower French city experience.

I would not describe Bordeaux as a city that overwhelms you with huge attractions every day. It is not Paris. It is not Rome. It is not London.

But that is also part of why Bordeaux works.

It is a city for walking, eating, drinking, visiting a few strong sights, and enjoying France at a slower pace.

For me, the best things to do in Bordeaux were Bassins des Lumières, Cité du Vin, Darwin Eco-système, and walking the historic center around Place de la Bourse, the Water Mirror, Porte Cailhau, La Grosse Cloche, Rue Sainte-Catherine, and Bordeaux Cathedral.

If you are planning your first visit, read my Bordeaux France travel Guide first, then use my One Day in Bordeaux itinerary to map out your first full day in the city.

Final Thoughts on the Best Things to Do in Bordeaux France

Bordeaux surprised me because it had more variety than I expected.

I knew about the wine reputation and the pretty streets, but I did not expect to enjoy the unique stops as much as I did. Bassins des Lumières was one of the most memorable museum experiences we had in France. Cité du Vin was better than I expected. Darwin Eco-système showed a more casual, creative side of the city. And the historic center really is beautiful.

Not every part of our Bordeaux trip went exactly as planned. The weather was grey, work had to be done, and we had some slower days. But that is real travel too.

If you are visiting Bordeaux, do not just rush through the city in one day if you can help it. Give yourself time to walk, eat, visit one or two strong museums, see the riverfront, try canelés, and experience both the elegant and creative sides of the city.

Bordeaux is not a city that needs to shout.

It is better when you let it unfold.

Next, read my One Day in Bordeaux itinerary if you want a simple walkable route through the city, or my Cité du Vin Bordeaux Guide if you are deciding whether Bordeaux’s famous wine museum is worth your time.
